A fatal runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night has left two pilots dead and prompted an active investigation involving U.S. and Canadian authorities, according to official statements from Air Canada and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).
Air Canada confirmed in a press release that Air Canada Express Flight AC8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, was involved in an accident upon landing at LaGuardia Airport on March 22, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The aircraft, identified as a Mitsubishi CRJ-900, had departed from Montréal. Preliminary information indicates that the flight was carrying approximately 72 passengers and four crew members, though the airline noted these figures remain subject to confirmation.

According to ALPA, the aircraft collided with a rescue and firefighting vehicle on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that both the Captain and First Officer were killed in the accident.
ALPA President Capt. Jason Ambrosi described the loss as “a profound tragedy,” noting that the pilots had dedicated their careers to the safe transport of passengers.
He added that the organisation’s accident investigation team is on site assisting the National Transportation Safety Board, while its Critical Incident Response Program is supporting affected members and families.
Emergency services responded to the scene and provided assistance to injured passengers. Air Canada reported that some individuals have been transported to local hospitals, though it has not confirmed the total number of injuries or whether there were additional fatalities.
Air Canada and Jazz Aviation stated that they are cooperating with both the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board in determining the cause of the incident.
Both companies indicated that teams are preparing to travel to the site, and further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
Family members seeking information about passengers on Flight AC8646 have been advised to contact Air Canada directly through its dedicated support line.
