United Airlines has announced a new seating concept designed to improve comfort for long-haul economy passengers, introducing the United Relax Row, a reconfigurable row of seats that can convert into a couch-like space during flight.
The new product, unveiled on March 24, 2026, will allow passengers in United Economy to transform a row of three seats into a lie-flat, mattress-style surface after takeoff. The airline said the feature is intended to offer greater flexibility and comfort, particularly on long-haul international routes.
The United Relax Row consists of three adjacent seats equipped with individually adjustable leg rests that can fold upward at a 90-degree angle. Once deployed, the configuration creates a larger surface suitable for stretching out, resting, or sleeping.
The concept is aimed at a broad range of travellers, including families with small children, couples, and solo passengers seeking additional space without upgrading to a premium cabin.

Passengers using the Relax Row will also receive additional onboard amenities designed to enhance comfort. These include a custom-fitted mattress pad, specially sized blankets, and extra pillows. For families, the offering also includes a plush toy and a children’s travel kit.
United expects the Relax Row to enter service in 2027, with a gradual rollout across its widebody fleet. By 2030, the airline plans to equip more than 200 Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft with the new seating option.
Each aircraft is expected to feature up to 12 Relax Row sections, positioned between standard United Economy seating and the United Premium Plus cabin.
The airline noted that it is currently the only North American carrier offering this type of seating and holds exclusivity for the design within the region.
The introduction of the Relax Row is part of a broader effort by United to improve the travel experience for families. The airline highlighted several existing initiatives, including a seat-mapping system that allows children under 12 to sit next to an accompanying adult at no additional cost at the time of booking.
United also offers dedicated children’s meal options on select flights where complimentary meals are served, along with family-focused inflight entertainment and a children’s travel kit developed in collaboration with Sesame Street.
According to the airline, the Relax Row reflects a continued focus on enhancing the experience for economy passengers, particularly on long-haul journeys where space and comfort are key considerations.
